DAVID BECKHAM’S SECOND COMING…SOME CHOICE QUOTES!
Since January 2007 and the announcement of what I dubbed David Beckham’s “second coming” after his career seemed dead and buried in the Spanish soccer league, I have written quite a few posts on the subject.
With news this week reminding us of how dismal the L.A. Galaxy have played even with Prince David supposedly in full flow but even more biting, the announcement of the sudden departure of General manager, Alexi Lalas and coach, Ruud Gullit…putting aside all the fun I have poked at the situation over the last few days, I felt compelled to look back at some of my posts, highlight a few and remind everyone that I told them so!
Here they are…
On whether David Beckham is worth all of US$250 million…
I do believe accolades such as FIFA's 1999 and 2001 runner up in the Player of the Year Award were a stretch. Is he worth the money? From a straight overall footballing perspective...running...pace...dribbling...etc...nah!. He is nowhere close to the Brazilian "god" Pele...the Argentinian magician - Maradona, not even close to some of today's lesser mortals such as Zidane and Ronaldinho. So is he worth $250 Million big ones...nah!
On what I felt about Beckham’s footballing skills…
Personally, I have always felt that Beckham was and is the most overrated, overhyped player in the history of sports. He is unquestionably a "free kick" genius...a real master, who bends a soccer ball like no one else can. There is no argument there. He is undoubtedly blessed with an amazing gift, but man for man...nah!
On whether Beckham’s presence would do any good for the MLS…
Will he prop up the the floundering MLS...will he peak America's interest in soccer...only time will tell. Will we see heart stopping wizardry on the field...nah! Will we see some mind boggling free kicks...maybe! But for sure and you can take it to the bank, there will be a lot of razzle dazzle off the field and a swarm of paparazzi befitting only a genius with unquestionable skills and track record worth $250 Million Dollars. Hmmm!
On whether Beckham would infect American youth with soccer genius and turn Team America into marauding champions…
The only thing Beckham (and wife Victoria) will infect is the already diseased paparazzi. Paparazzi who have anointed Paris Hilton and other no-talent nobodies superstars and taken up every page of my favourite newspaper (although that’s ok since I spend most of my time elsewhere these days), every second of TV time, and every inch of my most visited blogs with senseless coverage.
On how Alexi Lalas and the L.A. Galaxy could have better used their resources…
With US$250 million over five years, Alexi Lalas and the LA Galaxy could have gotten 1,000 David Beckhams from Brazil…that my friends, if we ever wanted to be infected with soccer, would be the coup de grace. In fact, with John McCain-type Immigration Policy, and an ample supply of Brazilians, America’s soccer troubles could be no more.
On the recommended punishment for Alexi Lalas and company for committing a sin of untold proportions…
First, we line up Alexi Lalas and the supposedly astute management team at the LA Galaxy and have their heads examined one by one. This, followed by the immediate commencement of proceedings as a prelude to trial and commensurate punishment for an extreme crime in foisting a “one-kick” has-been on well-thinking, do-not-suffer-fools-gladly soccer connoisseurs.
